Lamination is a finishing process in the book’s printing industry. It involves applying a thin polymeric film to the printed surface of a book cover. The aim is to provide a protective coating layer and to enhance the appearance of a book.
- Matte – provides velvety texture, smooths the contrast of darker colours and minimizes the visibility of scratches. It provides a subtle tactile effect that gives the book an elegant look
- Glossy – brings the print colours to life and makes them stand out. Glossy lamination reflects light and creates a shiny layer on the book’s surface
- Soft Touch – similar to matte lamination but different to touch thanks to an added element of a velvet feel. It gives the book a more luxurious and sophisticated look
- Others – anti-scratch, a special touch-effect and much more
Varnish is a liquid layer that ensures seal and protection of the ink on the book’s printed surface. Special coatings can enhance a cover and create a real contrast. The transparent layer of gloss or matte finish adds real value by creating a visual effect.
- Spot UV varnish – a transparent ink applied on the selected cover elements and hardened by ultraviolet light
- 3D Spot Varnish – spot UV coating with a raised 3D tactile effect generally used on titles, names, logos and graphic elements
- More specific effects (Glitter / Chrome / Holographic)
Foiling consists of layering foils – often gold or silver – on the cover of a book to create a specific pattern or design. This effect is perfect for attracting attention. Whether coloured, tinted, metallic, glittery, holographic or patterned, the choices are endless.
- Hot-stamping – a thin film used to permanently embed metallic material or pigmented colour patterns using a stamping process
- Dry-embossing – creates raised or textured patterns on a precise surface without using ink or heat. This particular technique adds texture and visual and tactile effects
- Embossing / Debossing – emphasizes a particular area of the design, creating something more elegant and luxurious
